How Does Fantasy Formula 1 Scoring Work?

By  on

This article is about the Official Formula 1 Fantasy Game, not the scoring for Pitlane Picks.

The official fantasy Formula 1 centers around creating your own team of 2 teams and 5 drivers. You are given a budget of $100m to pick your team. The goal of the game is to score the most points.

How drivers score points

Each of your 5 drivers scores points in qualifying, sprint race, and Grand Prix sessions.

  1. Qualifying results - Drivers can score up to 10 points (pole position) in qualifying. They can also score negative points if they get disqualified (-15) or do not set a time (-5)
  2. Sprint races - There are 5 ways drivers score during a sprint race
    1. Positions gained (+1 per)
    2. Positions lost (-1 per)
    3. Overtakes made (+1 per)
    4. Fastest lap (+5)
    5. Sprint race results (same points as Drivers championship points)
  3. Race - There are 5 ways drivers score during the Grand Prix
    1. Positions gained (+1 per)
    2. Positions lost (-1 per)
    3. Overtakes made (+1 per)
    4. Fastest lap (+10)
    5. Driver of the day (+10)
    6. Sprint race results (same points as Drivers championship points)

How teams (constructors) score points

Teams (also called "constructors") score the sum of the points from their drivers, with the exception of the "Driver of the day" points (+10).

Teams also score points based on pit stop times. The team with the fastest pit stop scores 10 additional points (2nd fastest pit and 3rd fastest pit also score)

Other ways you can earn points

There are also "DRS Boosts" that you can add to your drivers to double their points. Additionally, there are "Chips" which are other boosts to your points that can be applied to drivers or teams.

Other ways you can lose points

Each race you can make 2 transfers (swap a driver or team for another driver or team). If you make more than 2 transfers your team will be deducted 10 points per additional transfer.

Got it?

As you can see, scoring for the Official Formula 1 Fantasy Game is very complicated. There are budgets, boosts, chips, and transfers to think about. Unfortunately, that makes this style of fantasy Formula 1 unapproachable to casual F1 fans. I have heard many describe the scoring and team management as "tedious".

A better way

Bias warning! This article is on the website of an alternative fantasy Formula 1 game. But I promise you Pitlane Picks is better and more fun.

There is a better way to play fantasy Formula 1. It is dead simple. Just pick one driver or team per race. Score the points they do in the Driver/Constructor championship but you can't pick the same driver/team twice (full scoring explanation).

Playing this pick'em style is a lot of fun. Each week you know who to root for (the driver/team you picked) and who to root against (the picks of your rival players).

Git it a try. Invite your friends. Even casual Formula 1 fans enjoy playing Pitlane Picks.
